19th International Festival of Experimental Archaeology „DAYS OF LIVE ARCHAEOLOGY IN KERNAVĖ“

The 19th International Festival of Experimental Archaeology „DAYS OF LIVE ARCHAEOLOGY IN KERNAVĖ“ will be held on July 6-8, 2018. Festival is dedicated to the Lithuanian Statehood Day and the Centennial of the Restoration of the State.
Kernavė archaeological site, inscribed into UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004, is an open-air exhibition created by nature and man over many centuries. During the traditional festival “Days of Live Archaeology in Kernavė”, held since 1999, visitors are invited to put their hands on various crafts of prehistoric times and the Middle Ages with the help of masters of craftsmanship from Lithuania and other European countries: Belarus, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia and Ukraine. Visitors can experience archery, minting coins, riding horses, and also taste meals made according to ancient recipes. The event takes place in the craftsmen’s yards from the 13th – 14th centuries, which have been reconstructed on the basis of archaeological data (open-air exhibition). Visitors are also welcome to the Archaeological Site Museum, which houses archaeological finds from Kernavė archaeological site.

The conference “Archaeology for the People” addresses all those professionally interested people in public archaeology, (open-air) museums, living history and interpretation. While archaeologists discover ever more sites and gain insight in the past, the challenge is to convey these stories accurately to the public in an appealing way. There are many formats on how to tell the stories, archaeology teaches us. Over 300 archaeological open-air museums show one way, a multitude of live interpretation professionals are active every day, and many people demonstrate archaeological known techniques like flint knapping in museums, public libraries and many other sites. We invite all these people to Lithuania for the conference ‘Archaeology for the People”.
The conference takes place September 13-15, 2018 and is organised by EXARC together with the Administration of the State Cultural Reserve of Kernavė in Lithuania (Kernavė Archaeological Site).Venue will be theAdministration of the State Cultural Reserve of Kernavė, Kerniaus 4a, LT-19172 Kernavė, Širvintų distr., Lithuania. This site is very close to Vilnius which is well reachable through its international airport.
Call for Papers
The conference Archaeology for the People seeks best ways and practices for conveying values of archaeological heritage for the public. The participants are invited to present and discuss issues of investigation, contextualisation, presentation and interpretation of archaeological and experimental archaeological heritage both in theoretical and practical contexts, present their current experience and insights for the future.
Please send your abstract for a presentation or poster before March 1, 2018 to: firstname.lastname@example.org. Abstracts should be 100-200 words. Please indicate clearly if the abstract is for a poster or a paper and include author names, author affiliation and an email address for the corresponding author.
Registration will open early 2018. We aim to keep the registration fees low. Also those presenting a paper or poster will need to register.
The 5th Workshop of Historical Wood Utilization, 2nd to 6th of September 2017, Vilnius, Lithuania
Historical Wood Utilization is a regular international meeting of scientist and practitioners interested in different aspects of wood use throughout the times. Main topic of HWU2017 will be “Wood Working”. The workshop will be organized like the last ones: interdisciplinary, fostering discussions, a combination of oral presentations, practical demonstrations and excursions and will be limited to 35 participants.
